What is a Career Change Dog? Our professional trainers carefully select our dogs by evaluating them for temperament, health and eagerness to please. They are rescued from shelters where they are at risk for euthanasia. They enter a rigorous training program to become Hearing Dogs for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Not all of our outstanding dogs can meet the demands of becoming a Certified Assistance Dog, thus the need for a "Career Change". They are, however, still winners, and make wonderful pets. Many are already housebroken and some know basic obedience commands. In short, these "near misses" make wonderful companions. We can help match you with a lifelong canine companion.

Shadow

Posted on 4/29/2012

Shadow is a 42lb. cocker spaniel/border collie mix.  She is quite a young 9 years of age and originally came to us at 1 yr old for consideration in our Hearing Dog Program.  Shadow was adopted out as a companion pet to a lovely woman who is now unable to care for her due to her own declining health.  Shadow returned to us the first week of February 2020.

Shadow is in remarkable health and enjoys romping with the other dogs, going for walks in the neighborhood and being with her person.  She is good with other animals although she lived as an only dog for many years.  We would love for her to have her one and only person that will shower her with affection and include her in daily activities.  This would make this girl shine!

While we found Shadow timid is a young dog, she seems much more confident with her maturity.  She may still need to warm up to some new situations but she is happiest to be included in any fun!

Shadow has great housemanners and is used to all the comforts of home.  She had her own yard to go out for bathroom relief and we would prefer to give this to her again. She will alert bark to things that are not familiar or if startled.  She does respond to a verbal interruption, however, and indoors she is quite quiet and mellow.

If you are interested in meeting Shadow, please complete our online application so we can better answer any questions you may have.  If you would like to meet Shadow, we will reach out to you after completing an application.  Our meet and greets are conducted on our foundation grounds in Malibu but finalizing adoptions are done in our forever homes.  For this reason, we prefer to keep our companion pet adoptions within 50 miles of Malibu, CA.  Thanks for your understanding.
