What is a Career Change Dog? Our professional trainers carefully select our dogs by evaluating them for temperament, health and eagerness to please. They are rescued from shelters where they are at risk for euthanasia. They enter a rigorous training program to become Hearing Dogs for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Not all of our outstanding dogs can meet the demands of becoming a Certified Assistance Dog, thus the need for a "Career Change". They are, however, still winners, and make wonderful pets. Many are already housebroken and some know basic obedience commands. In short, these "near misses" make wonderful companions. We can help match you with a lifelong canine companion.

Coal 2021

Posted on 6/28/2018

Coal is an 8ish year old Miniature Poodle/Schnauzer/Silky/Yorkie/Water Hound mix (we ran a DNA test).  He weighs approximately 17 pounds.  He is a very friendly and loving dog.  He is playful and smart and funny. Coal is also extremely energetic.  He gets overly excited by people and critters outside and likes to run in circles and bark intensley.  He will do this until a human interrupts the behavior.  He has what we in the industry call "impulse control issues'.  Basically they are sudden reaction or outburst of barking and chasing of things that are his triggers.  In the house he settles down nicely and isn’t nearly as reactive because he can't see out the windows.

Coal recently had to have an MRI and it showed that he had a small stroke.  The doctor said it rare and that it is unlikely for it to happen again.  He has recovered from it and is back to to his active normal self.

Please note that we only adopt our Career Change Dogs to homes within approximately 50 miles from our location in Malibu, CA.  If you are interest in adopting Coal, please fill out our online application found under 'Dogs for Adoption' at www.samsimonfoundation.com  If we think he is a good match with your application, someone will contact you to arrange a meet and greet.
