What is a Career Change Dog?

Our professional trainers carefully select our dogs by evaluating them for temperament, health and eagerness to please. They are rescued from shelters where they are at risk for euthanasia. They enter a rigorous training program to become Hearing Dogs for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Not all of our outstanding dogs can meet the demands of becoming a Certified Assistance Dog, thus the need for a "Career Change". They are, however, still winners, and make wonderful pets. Many are already housebroken and some know basic obedience commands. In short, these "near misses" make wonderful companions. We can help match you with a lifelong canine companion.

Maribelle is a 1 year old Bassett/Beagle X that weights 58lbs.  She was an owner surrender to the shelter as a young puppy because of isolation barking (being left home alone).  Since she has been in our care, this has not been an issue, although she is rarely left alone.  Maribelle does have an allergy to grasses and so her exposure needs to remain limited.  While she definitely needs dog friends in her life, we have to monitor that she is not too playful for long, as she does have an orthodpedic issue that can cause her to limp from discomfort and sometimes warrants pain medication.   She is a friendly dog who is always eager to learn something new and will do well with training classes.  She enjoys kids but can get mouthy with excitement and so would prefer an adult, or teenage kids only home.  She would love to be with someone who knows and loves the basset and the beagle breeds and where she will feel like the princess she believes to be.

Merlin is 6 year old Lhasapoo mix and weighs about 25lbs.  He was adopted to a very sweet woman living here in Malibu 4 years ago and was returned  because his owner was entering an Assisted Living and he could not go with her.   Merlin is affectionate with people although prefers women.  He has learned to be a little guard dog at the door but he loves his treats more than he loves being on bark patrol.  He is a bit playful but mostly used to a quiet life with someone enjoying their twighlight years.    He is good around other dogs and in the car.  He doesn’t shed but should have occasional haircuts and regular nail trims.

Breezy is a 5 month old papillon/spaniel mix. She weighs about 15 lbs and is likely not going to be much larger than her current petite size and frame. She is a puppy so is playful, energetic and loving. She will need a family that can offer her regular outings to socialize with people and other dogs. She was selected to be in our Hearing Dog program but lacks the confidence needed to go into stores and restaurants. She will make a great companion for someone with plenty of time and a flexible schedule.
